Newsbank Historical Newspapers contains detailed images of America's historic newspapers, 1690-2000. Especially useful includes the clustered topics on the front page, which are split up by era. 

ProQuest Historical Newspapers contains digitized news articles from the New York Times, The Washington Post, Christian Science Monitor and Los Angeles Times from 1851-2002. Searchable by era and includes advertisements.
